Juanma Bajo Ulloa's 1991 first feature follows Ami, six years old, and her mother Carmen. Carmen's single obsession is giving her husband a son; Ami is the child growing up inside that obsession with nobody looking at her. A boy is finally born and something irreversible happens in the house: the baby dies. From there the film watches the bond between mother and daughter come apart. It does not load the weight onto the child; what it is really asking is what an adult's fixation does to one. It won the Golden Shell at San Sebastián and then three Goya awards.
