What California Dreamin' Is About
1999, during the Kosovo war. A NATO train carrying military equipment is stopped as it passes through a small Romanian town. The man who stops it is the stationmaster, who is also the most powerful man in the town, and his pretext is missing paperwork. The American soldiers are stuck there for days and the town is transformed: girls, drink, business opportunities, old scores, and everyone's private idea of America. Cristian Nemescu never finished editing it; he was killed in a car crash in 2006 at twenty-seven. Its Romanian title, Nesfârșit, means unfinished. It was released as the rough cut and won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2007.
