What Call Me Madam Is About
This musical directed by Walter Lang opens with Sally Adams, a well known Washington hostess, being appointed ambassador to a small European duchy in the Truman years. Knowing nothing of diplomatic form, calling everybody by their first name and trying to settle questions of money by haggling, she turns the protocol upside down. The comedy comes out of that mismatch, though Sally is never built as a fool, and looking at people rather than at rules turns out to work. Ethel Merman brought the part to the screen after playing it on stage, and the energy of the film is all in her voice. The dance sequences with Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen are its liveliest passages, and George Sanders plays the prime minister.
