What Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff Is About
Jack Cardiff went into a studio as a child and worked with a camera for seventy years. He started in the silent era and became one of the few people operating the Technicolor machine in the years it first reached Britain. The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death and Black Narcissus are among the films he shot. Black Narcissus brought him an Oscar in 1948. Craig McCall's documentary is built on Cardiff telling it himself; it was filmed shortly before his death. He describes how he thought about colour, what he took from painters and how he worked with directors. Martin Scorsese, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall and Charlton Heston are among those speaking. Cardiff received an Honorary Oscar in 2001, the first cinematographer to be given one. The film is not a technical lesson but a record of how a master saw his own work.
