What Carve Her Name with Pride Is About
Violette Szabo is a young woman of French descent living in England. After losing her husband in the war she joins the British Special Operations Executive. She goes through the training and is sent into occupied France to help the resistance. She comes back from the first mission. On the second she is captured. Lewis Gilbert's British film is adapted from R. J. Minney's book and recounts a real life. Szabo was killed at Ravensbrück; she was awarded the George Cross after her death and her small daughter received the medal. Virginia McKenna plays Szabo. The telling makes no speeches about heroism, setting down the loss and what it cost quietly instead.
