What Cássia Is About
Cássia Eller was one of the strongest voices in Brazilian music in the nineties, and the country was shaken when she died in 2001 at thirty-nine. Paulo Henrique Fontenelle’s documentary is about her life as much as her presence on stage: motherhood, her refusal to hide anything, and what that opened up. The starting point was a conversation with Maria Eugênia Vieira, her partner of fourteen years. After the singer’s death, custody of their son Chicão was granted to Maria Eugênia, the first such ruling for a same-sex parent in Brazil, and the film follows that process too. It came out in January 2015.
