What Caught in the Draft Is About
In David Butler’s 1941 Paramount comedy, Bob Hope plays a film star who cannot stand loud noises. He decides to marry his way out of the draft, falls for a colonel’s daughter instead, and then he and two friends enlist by mistake. In basic training his entire project is to look good in front of Antoinette and her father, and his military career is slapstick from beginning to end. The film arrived before Pearl Harbor, shortly after the 1940 Selective Service Act, and made a joke of precisely the thing on everybody’s mind that year. Dorothy Lamour plays the colonel’s daughter, and it became Paramount’s second biggest picture of the year.
