What The Princess and the Pirate Is About
Princess Margaret boards a ship in disguise to escape the marriage her father has arranged. But the pirates know who she is and plan to take the ship and hold her for ransom. On the same ship is a hopeless travelling actor named Sylvester. The two of them escape together and end up in a port full of pirates. Bob Hope takes the lead in David Butler's comedy, with Virginia Mayo as the princess. The film was shot in Technicolor and imitates the pattern of the adventure pictures of its day directly: the sword, the map, the buried treasure. Hope refuses to be the hero in every scene, and that is exactly where the joke comes from. Bing Crosby makes a brief appearance at the end.
