What Captain January Is About
A little girl called Star is raised by the lighthouse keeper who pulled her out of the water after her parents drowned. When the town truant officer decides she belongs in a boarding school, the life they have built at the lighthouse is put at risk. It is one of Shirley Temple’s best loved pictures, and the song and dance she does with Buddy Ebsen, At the Codfish Ball, turns the difference in their heights into the joke of the number itself. David Butler directed, from Laura E. Richards’ 1890 children’s book, first filmed as a silent in 1924.
