What Censored Voices Is About
One week after the 1967 war ended, a group of young kibbutz members led by the writer Amos Oz sat down with soldiers coming back from the front, talked with them at length behind closed doors, and recorded all of it on tape. The Israeli army censored the recordings, and the kibbutzniks were allowed to publish only a fragment, which appeared in 1970 as the book The Seventh Day. Mor Loushy’s eighty four minute documentary opens the tapes in full for the first time forty eight years later and lays the soldiers’ voices over archival footage from those days. It sets what the returning men actually said against a war still recounted as a proud and righteous victory. The German Israeli co-production screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015.
