What Charlie Chan at Treasure Island Is About
On a flight to San Francisco a passenger beside Charlie Chan dies, and the death is closed as suicide. Chan reads it as murder, and the trail takes him to Treasure Island, where the world's fair has been built. He runs into a stage magician, a fake spiritualist and someone who really can read minds. Blackmail, disguise and a seance fold into each other. Norman Foster's film uses the 1939 Golden Gate exposition as its location and is counted among the better liked entries in the series. Sidney Toler plays Chan: a Chinese detective played by a white actor is the thing the series is criticised for most today. Cesar Romero plays the magician. The puzzle is put together properly, and the film does not believe in the seance business.
