What Charlie Chan in Reno Is About
Mary Whitman goes to Reno for a divorce and stays at a hotel that caters to people waiting for theirs. When a woman there is murdered she is arrested as the suspect, although others at the hotel also wanted the dead woman out of the way. Charlie Chan comes from Honolulu to solve it. Norman Foster directed, from a story by Philip Wylie, for 20th Century Fox, and it opened on 16 June 1939. Sidney Toler plays Chan again and Victor Sen Yung again plays his number two son Jimmy. That is the fixed arrangement of the series: a white American actor plays the Chinese detective, while the son beside him is played by an actor who really is of Chinese descent.
