What Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation Is About
Mr Moto is in Egypt to stop a criminal organisation determined to steal the crown of the Queen of Sheba. When the crown is shipped to America the job becomes identifying the thief before he can move again. This was the eighth and last film in the series; Lorre left the studio the same year and the Fox run ended with him. One fact cannot be walked around now: the Japanese detective is played by a Hungarian Jewish actor who had fled the Nazis, in the racial make-up the period took for granted. The character comes from John P. Marquand’s novels, and Lorre carries the part with an odd seriousness despite the stereotype.
