What Chess Story Is About
Vienna, 1938. When the Nazis enter the city, the notary Josef Bartok tries to get out and is caught. They do not put him in a prison; they lock him alone in a hotel room, because that kind of torture leaves no marks. Months in, a stolen chess book keeps him alive: he memorises every game and plays himself, until the game stops being a rescue and becomes another illness. Adapted from Stefan Zweig's last work, finished shortly before his death.
