What Chicken People Is About
Every November, breeders of exotic poultry from across America converge on Columbus to compete at the Ohio National Poultry Show, where their birds are judged against ten thousand others on plumage, colour, comb, body shape and even personality; in the trade it is called the Westminster of chickens. Nicole Lucas Haimes’ documentary tells this world through three competitors: a musical theatre performer from Missouri, an engineer who builds racing engines in New Hampshire and a homemaker from Indiana. The film does not laugh at them; it asks what gap this strange pursuit fills in their lives, and shows that all three have a story that came before the birds. It is as much about what perfectionism is as about the contest. It premiered at SXSW in 2016.
