China's Haze: Under the Doom

Chai Jing's documentary, released in 2015, is about air pollution in China. A former state television reporter, she paid for it herself. The reason she started is personal: a tumour developed in her daughter before birth and had to be removed soon afterwards, and Chai holds the air responsible. The film combines a lecture with factory visits and interviews, and it goes straight at the state energy companies, at steel and coal production, and at the environment ministry's inability to enforce anything against the large polluters. It was watched hundreds of millions of times online within days, and was then taken down.
