What Citizen Jane: Battle for the City Is About
The documentary is about the writer and urban activist Jane Jacobs defending the older fabric of New York in the 1960s against the vast projects of Robert Moses, the most powerful city planner of the era. Jacobs first gathered her objections in a book published in 1961, and then fought street by street against pushing Fifth Avenue through Washington Square Park, against demolishing the old buildings of Greenwich Village and against an expressway that would have cut lower Manhattan in two. Matt Tyrnauer’s ninety two minute production combines archive footage, passages read from what the two of them wrote, and commentary from journalists and scholars. The film moves the argument past the question of how a city should be planned to the question of whose city it is.
