What Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood Is About
Matt Tyrnauer's 2018 documentary tells the life of Scotty Bowers, who worked at a Hollywood petrol station after the Second World War and spent years arranging sexual partners for film stars, an account he set down in a memoir written in his nineties. The film takes on both the content of that account and the questioning of its truth. Its most honest quality is admitting that Bowers cannot prove what he says; the claims concern people who are dead and there is no independent verification. Tyrnauer does not conceal that, though he also relays the account without interrogating it. The film is stronger on Bowers's own life story: childhood abuse, the trauma of war, and a sexuality built on top of them. Who it's for: viewers interested in Hollywood history and the relationship between sexuality and secrecy. Who it's not for: anyone troubled by unverified claims made about the dead, or avoiding content about child abuse.
