What Comedy of Innocence Is About
Camille is turning nine. He had promised to show his parents the videos he had been shooting on his own on his ninth birthday: the tail of a cat running off, a window, the face of a veiled woman. When his mother Ariane meets him in the park that day the boy is uneasy, looking at the ground, and he says he wants to go back to his real home and his real mother. Raul Ruiz adapted the film loosely from Massimo Bontempelli’s late-1920s novella The Boy with Two Mothers, writing the screenplay with Francoise Dumas. It screened at the Venice Film Festival on 1 September 2000. Isabelle Huppert plays the mother and Jeanne Balibar the other woman.
