Three Crowns of the Sailor

Raúl Ruiz's 1983 French film is a sailor's tale about storytelling itself. A young man who has killed his professor meets a sailor who offers him a place on his ship in exchange for three Danish crowns and his attention while he recounts his life. The story he tells is made of ports that fold into each other, dead crew members and faces that recur. Ruiz's method is to collapse logic deliberately: the same event is told in different ways, the geography does not hold, and the characters get lost inside the story they are telling. The image uses wide-angle lenses, coloured filters and strange objects in the foreground; every frame is a puzzle in itself. The sense of displacement Ruiz carried as a Chilean exile can be read as the film's actual subject. Who it's for: viewers who like experimental narrative, Raúl Ruiz's cinema and a baroque visual language. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative consistency and resolution, or who will struggle to follow nested stories.
