What Little White Dove Is About
María, a girl from a Santiago neighbourhood, falls for Juan Carlos, the son of a wealthy family, during the Allende government. Loosely adapted from Enrique Lafourcade’s novel, the film uses the romance to look at the thing Chile was arguing about most at that moment, which is class, and Los Jaivas wrote the music. Raúl Ruiz shot it in six weeks in 1973 and finished only days before the coup of 11 September. The Pinochet authorities then impounded it, and the print sat forgotten in the vaults of Chile Films for nineteen years. It could not be shown until 1992, and it now counts among the essential Chilean films.
