Socialist Realism

Raúl Ruiz began shooting this film in Chile in 1973 and the coup left it unfinished. The material was completed and released decades later. The film takes the Allende period as a series of short stories, moving between a worker and a bourgeois family; the narrative mocks everyone who carries political language and makes no one a hero. It belongs to Ruiz's early work and carries the arguments of that moment directly. The tone is ironic; the form is scattered and deliberately leaves a sense of incompletion. Who it's for: viewers of Chilean cinema and political satire. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with the politics of the period; the film does not explain its references.
