What Three Sad Tigers Is About
Raul Ruiz’s first completed feature watches a weekend in the semi-criminal underworld of Santiago. Tito, who works at a car dealership, his sister Amanda, a striptease dancer who also works as a prostitute, and their friend Luis hold on to one another across drinking tables and scattered conversation. The narration is deliberately loose, and what comes out is less a plot than a portrait of a society. The film is adapted from Alejandro Sieveking’s play of the same name. Ruiz, then twenty-eight, took the top prize at Locarno with it, and it is generally treated as the start of a new Chilean cinema. Shenda Roman, Nelson Villagra and Luis Alarcon are in the cast.
