What Command Decision Is About
The Second World War, at the headquarters of the American air force in England. The generals have to decide: hit the German factories building the new jet fighters, or hold back knowing what the mission will cost in lives. The film takes place almost entirely indoors, in a handful of rooms, which follows from its source being a stage play. William Wister Haines wrote the novel first, then the play, which ran on Broadway for about a year from 1947. Sam Wood directed. Clark Gable plays the commander who sends his men to their deaths. It is a film of decisions rather than flying, and the war is shown at the map table.
