What Commandos Strike at Dawn Is About
A quiet widower living with his small daughter in a Norwegian fishing village stops being quiet once the occupation reaches it. He gets to Britain and comes back with a commando force. Irwin Shaw adapted it from C. S. Forester's story The Commandos, and Columbia released it in 1942, while the war was still running, as open propaganda built to argue for the Norwegian resistance. The Canadian coast stood in for Norway. Paul Muni came back to the screen with it after two years away and Lillian Gish after ten; Muni is said to have thrown himself at the part because he regarded the film as his own contribution to the war effort.
