What Comrades Is About
Bill Douglas's three-hour film, released in 1987, is about the six English farm labourers known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs. In the early 1830s they were tried and transported to Australia for having formed a union to ask for fair wages. The film's subtitle belongs to a lanternist, and the telling is built accordingly: pre-cinematic forms of show, silhouettes, tableaux. Its second half follows the men separately in Australia. Many cinemas would not take it because of its length. One of the few films to tell the founding of the labour movement without falling into the language of legend.
