What Confessions of a Nazi Spy Is About
Ed Renard, an FBI agent, goes after a German espionage network operating in prewar America. What he runs into is not only agents but the German American Bund: an organisation meeting openly in New York, in uniform, running propaganda. The further the investigation goes, the further the network turns out to reach. Anatole Litvak's 1939 film was the first openly anti-Nazi picture made by a major Hollywood studio. It opened in May 1939, four months before the war began in Europe. The script drew on what the FBI agent Leon Turrou had written about the case. Germany and a number of other countries banned it, and people working on it received death threats. Edward G. Robinson takes the lead.
