What Crayon Shin-chan: Intense Battle! Robo Dad Strikes Back Is About
This 2014 entry in the Crayon Shin-chan series plants an unexpected emotional weight inside its comic form. After a scheme promising to empower pushover fathers, Shin-chan's father Hiroshi comes home in a robot body. He looks the same, he is even stronger, but whether he is still a person is the question the Nohara family has to answer. The film keeps the crude humour viewers of the series expect while running a surprisingly serious line about fatherhood and family ties. The emotional intensity of its final stretch is among the most remembered moments in the run. It is regarded as one of the best-liked entries in Japan's long-running Shin-chan film tradition. Who it's for: viewers of Crayon Shin-chan and anyone who likes animation that carries comedy and feeling together. Who it's not for: anyone with no patience for the series' crude humour and toilet jokes; the film does not give them up.
