What Crazy Horse Is About
The documentary goes behind the scenes at the Crazy Horse in Paris. A new show is being put together: there is constant friction between the choreographer Philippe Decouflé and the management, the dancers rehearse, lighting and costume are argued over. The camera explains nothing and interviews nobody; it only watches and waits. Frederick Wiseman's film follows the method of all his documentaries: no narrator, no music added, no commentary. The subject is not nudity but how an institution works, and the tension between an artistic claim and commercial necessity. The film neither condemns that nor defends it. The running time is long and the pace deliberately slow.
