What Crossing the Line Is About
In 1962 an American soldier stationed in South Korea left his unit, walked across the most heavily fortified strip of land on earth and defected to North Korea. James Dresnok became a star of the propaganda films there and then vanished for years. Daniel Gordon's documentary, made forty five years later, has him describe his childhood, his desertion and his life in the DPRK in his own words. The conditions of the recording matter: the interviews were made inside North Korea with the regime's permission, which shapes the frame everything is said in.
