What Dark Money Is About

Through the door opened by the United States Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, corporate money whose source cannot be traced flows into election campaigns. The documentary tells that story not from the country as a whole but from a single state, Montana, following a local journalist, John S. Adams, as he works to trace where the money comes from and showing in concrete cases how pressure is put on elected officials even in a small state. Kimberly Reed’s ninety eight minute documentary screened at the Sundance Film Festival on 22 January 2018, opened on 1 October that year and was broadcast by PBS. It won a producer award at Sundance and the David Carr award for truth in non-fiction filmmaking.
