Daughter of Deceit

Don Quintín catches his wife with his closest friend. In the row that follows she tells him the child is not his. He takes the little girl and leaves her on the doorstep of the town drunk. Years pass. Quintín goes on to run a gambling house, but his conscience over the child he abandoned never quietens, and he sets out to find her. Luis Buñuel's Mexican film is adapted from a stage comedy by Carlos Arniches and José Estremera; years earlier in Spain, Buñuel had backed an adaptation of the same work as a producer. Luis and Janet Alcoriza wrote the screenplay. This is one of the commercial films Buñuel made to order in Mexico; there is little of his own signature, but there are places where he mocks the melodrama he is working in.
