What David Wants to Fly Is About
The director David Sieveking, an admirer of David Lynch, takes his idol’s advice and tries the transcendental meditation taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He pays for the courses, receives his mantra, attempts what is called yogic flying, and then begins asking about the movement’s finances and about the fight over succession that followed the leader’s death, at which point doors start closing. People who had been helpful, Lynch among them, ask him to stop filming; once he meets former members the atmosphere hardens and Lynch threatens legal action. The film was shot across five years and presents its findings as its own account, which the parties involved have disputed.
