What Forget Me Not Is About
The director David Sieveking left home years ago to make films; he comes back to look after his mother Gretel, who has Alzheimer’s, and to give his father Malte, who has been doing it alone for years, a few weeks’ relief. He brings the camera with him and records these weeks in which he takes on the care. Gretel no longer knows the people around her, but her wordplay and her cheerfulness are intact, and the time he spends with his mother turns into an account of the family’s history as much as of the illness. A youth spent in the left wing circles of Zurich, the open relationship his parents kept up for a lifetime and the respect between them slowly come out. David Sieveking’s eighty eight minute German documentary was completed in 2013.
