What Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay Is About
Ricky Jay was a magician known for cards and sleight of hand, and also one of the most serious collectors of the history of magic there has ever been. The documentary builds his life out of the stories he tells about it: the performances that started in his grandfather's house, going on stage very young, and everything he took from his teachers. Molly Bernstein's film does not explain how the tricks are done and never intends to. What it documents instead is a body of knowledge passed from master to apprentice, and a craft that is disappearing. Jay is a superb talker and a meticulous archivist at once. David Mamet and Dick Cavett appear. You will not look at a deck of cards the same way afterwards.
