What Déjà vu Is About

Mick Nich, a Chicago gangster, informs on his own gang and disappears to Odessa. The mafia sends the best hitman in the city, Johnny Pollack, after him. Pollack loses his memory the moment he arrives in the Soviet Union, and ends up wandering around among a group of Odessans who have decided he is a harmless butterfly collector, trying to work out who he is. Juliusz Machulski's Polish-Soviet co-production puts thirties American gangster pictures and Soviet daily life inside the same frame, with Jerzy Stuhr in the lead. Made as the Cold War was ending, it is a comedy in which both sides laugh at their own clichés.
