What Piano Girl Is About
After the Russo Turkish war of 1877, part of the Molokan community the Tsar did not want living in Russia was moved to Kars, and Mishka’s family was among them. The film finds Mishka in his seventies. The man who once turned the village mill lost his trade when modern machines arrived and has fallen into poverty. Popuc, the sour old woman of the village, hates him and does not even want him living there. The enmity between these two old people carries what the film is really about: living somewhere for many years and being counted as one of its people are not the same thing. Tarik Akan and Serif Sezer play the leads in Murat Saracoglu’s hundred minute Turkish film, completed in 2009.
