What Devil's Island Is About
A French doctor is convicted of treason and sent to the penal colony on Devil’s Island. There he has to perform brain surgery on the daughter of the commandant who holds him prisoner. The man is innocent, and his ability to save a life is the only card left in his hand. The film also takes up the conditions of the colony and what is done to the prisoners; the harshness here is not scenery but the subject. What it fits into sixty two minutes is a criticism of the prison itself. Boris Karloff plays the lead in William Clemens’s American film, completed in 1939.
