What Nancy Drew... Reporter Is About
Nancy Drew enters a newspaper's writing competition for schoolchildren. When she is about to be handed one of the small assignments given out for the prize, she grabs a real one instead: the inquest into a woman who died of poisoning. She believes the young woman accused of it is innocent. She takes her neighbour Ted along and starts looking for evidence, and the thing turns into a detective case. William Clemens's film is one of four Nancy Drew pictures Warner Bros made at the end of the 1930s. Bonita Granville plays Nancy. The character comes from books written under a pen name inside the publishing operation set up by Edward Stratemeyer, and those books are still in print. The films are short, fast and light; Nancy acting on her own was notable for the period.
