What Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase Is About
Nancy Drew helps two elderly women struggling with the odd conditions of their father’s will, which have to be met to the letter. Then their chauffeur is murdered and the business turns into a murder investigation. Nancy starts looking into it without waiting for anyone’s permission; her father is a lawyer, and her friend Ted is dragged in whether he likes it or not, usually getting the most dangerous part of the job. The film is one of the short, fast series pictures made at the end of the thirties, and it takes the Nancy of the books somewhere closer to comedy. Bonita Granville plays the lead in William Clemens’s sixty minute film, completed in 1939.
