What Diary for My Children Is About

The first of Márta Mészáros's four Diary films follows Juli, a teenager sent back to Budapest from the Soviet Union in the years after the war. Her parents died there. Her guardianship passes to Magda, a senior party official whose flat has no room for grief, and Juli's only refuge becomes the cinema, which she slips off to again and again. The material is the director's own: Mészáros's father, a sculptor, vanished in the Soviet purges of 1938. Shot in 1982, the film was held back until 1984, and in that year it took the Grand Prix at Cannes. Zsuzsa Czinkóczi carries it almost entirely on a silent, unbudging stare.
