What Nine Months Is About
In Márta Mészáros’s 1976 film, Juli works in a brick factory and begins a relationship with the foreman, keeping from him the fact that she has a son born outside marriage. When he finds out he appears at first to accept it, then hides it from his own family, and the film grows out of that concealment rather than out of the revelation. Mészáros builds the whole thing on a woman’s right to decide the terms of her own life, and never once turns it into a lecture. The birth of Lili Monori’s own child was filmed for the ending. It won the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes in 1976; a year earlier Mészáros had become the first woman to win the Golden Bear in Berlin.
