Dinner in America

A punk singer who likes setting fires and funds himself through drug trials, and the fan who has been writing to him for two years. Simon is on the run; Patty gives him shelter without knowing he is the masked frontman of PSYOPS, her favourite band. Adam Rehmeier wrote and directed it, assembling the story between 2013 and 2014 from two separate sketches he had written earlier. It was shot around Metro Detroit, with Kyle Gallner and Emily Skeggs leading and Pat Healy, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Lea Thompson in support. The real story started after the premiere. It played Sundance in January 2020 and found no distributor. After nearly two years it got a limited release on 27 May 2022. Then in September 2024 clips spread on TikTok and the film came back to life, filling sold-out screenings in city after city, with the campaign running into 2025. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91 percent, with critics praising its infectious punk energy and the chemistry between the leads. Who it is for: viewers who want punk, an odd love story and suburban rage in one package. Who it is not for: anyone put off by crude humour and characters shouting at each other. The first half is deliberately repellent.
