What Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti Is About
Maya Deren spent years in Haiti from the late 1940s filming Vodou ceremonies and dances, and never cut the material. She died in 1961 and the footage simply sat. The film people watch now was assembled and completed in the 1980s by her third husband, Teiji Ito, and his wife Cherel Winett Ito, with a soundtrack by Ito. Almost all of it is bodies in motion: dance, drumming and possession in Rada and Petro services. Deren had approached the subject by staying inside it for a long time rather than looking in from outside, and the fifty-two minutes that resulted remain one of the most argued-over examples of ethnographic film.
