What Don't Blink - Robert Frank Is About
The documentary tells the work and the life of a photographer and film director together; in this man the two are not separate to begin with. The work built up from the photograph book published in fifty eight to the present is walked through piece by piece in the film. The person who made the film has worked for years as his editor, and that closeness is both the strength and the limit of the portrait. The account builds no orderly life story; images, sounds, remembered passages and losses are laid out side by side like goods on a stall. Instead of offering an orderly explanation the film imitates the man’s own way of working: cutting and pasting, writing over, leaving things unfinished. Laura Israel’s eighty two minute documentary was completed in 2015.
