Don't Breathe

Fede Álvarez’s 2016 film deliberately inverts its sympathy contract at the midpoint. You enter on the side of the burglars, with a blind veteran as the victim, and what is found in the basement spoils both. For a viewer who wants a clean party to back, the film removes one. The second decision is the space. It stays in one house and plays close to real time, so the tension comes from knowing the floor plan: the film teaches you the house before it starts hunting in it. When the power is cut and everything goes pitch black, the audience advantage goes too: in that stretch you see no more than the characters. Álvarez built the darkness not as a night vision cliché but as a low contrast, shadowless monochrome, and had the actors wear lenses that simulated dilated pupils while genuinely blinding them. Sam Raimi produced. The story is set in Detroit but was shot almost entirely in Hungary. Álvarez made it in reaction to his own Evil Dead remake, wanting less blood and no supernatural element, and most of the jump scares carry no musical sting. A good fit if learning a floor plan counts as the tension itself. Less so if you expect the film to leave you someone to side with at the end.
