Doraemon: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend

Nobita finds a discarded seedling and brings it home. With one of Doraemon's gadgets he gives it life and names it Kibo. Kibo grows, and one day is taken: the princess of the Green Planet, where the plants live, has come for him. There the plants have decided that humans have ruined the earth and plan to turn all of humanity into vegetation. Ayumu Watanabe directs. It is one of the features in the Doraemon film series, which has produced a film a year since the end of the seventies. The subject is the environment and the film does not dispose of it with a slogan: the plants' argument is built soundly and the humans are plainly in the wrong. The series works the same way here. The gadgets out of Doraemon's pocket solve the problems and the same gadgets create new ones; the comedy rests on that loop. It belongs to the films made with the series' new voice cast; the show was entirely renewed in 2005 and the voices changed. It runs about a hundred minutes and the scale grows in the last section. Who it is for: viewers of Doraemon and anyone looking for environmental animation to watch with children. Who it is not for: the narrative is long and repetitive, the middle passages slow it down, and the relationships go unexplained for a newcomer.
