Children of the Sea

A girl left alone at school and at home over the summer meets two boys raised in the sea. At the same time fish everywhere in the world start gathering strangely. The film deliberately refuses to explain; the final section is almost entirely abstract imagery and the narrative concludes in pictures rather than words. The animation carries very dense hand-drawn detail and the underwater passages are its main show. Ayumu Watanabe directed, produced by Studio 4C, with music by Joe Hisaishi, adapted from a manga. Before watching: the film does not close its story plainly and the last thirty minutes are experience rather than narrative. The intense light and colour transitions may trouble sensitive viewers.
