What Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet Is About
Paul Ehrlich looks for a substance that will find the agent of a disease and strike it directly. He works on diphtheria antitoxin, catches tuberculosis in his own laboratory, and after an enormous run of failures arrives at a compound that treats syphilis on the six hundred and sixth attempt. He calls it a magic bullet, and chemotherapy begins there. William Dieterle's 1940 film had to fight the censors simply to say the word syphilis on screen. Edward G. Robinson plays Ehrlich. The other meaning of the film is its timing: in 1940 Hollywood was honouring a Jewish scientist whose name had been struck from public life in Germany.
