What Love Letters Is About
William Dieterle's film comes from Christopher Massie's novel Pity My Simplicity, and the screenplay was Ayn Rand's first work for the cinema, with Cyrano de Bergerac plainly behind the idea. In Italy during the war, Alan writes letters to Victoria in his friend Roger's name, and she falls in love with the letters. Roger marries her and then dies. Alan comes home badly wounded and meets a woman who now lives under the name Singleton and remembers nothing of her past. The tension grows out of that: nobody can be sure what remembering would cost. Jennifer Jones's performance brought one of the film's four Academy Award nominations, and where it all lands is left unspoiled here.
